Inter’s coach Walter Mazzarri was a guest on the program “Quelli che..” on Rai Due and gave a long interview in which he talked about both Inter and his new book, but he began by talking about Inter’s current season: “Mazzarri’s Inter has not only appeared in this series of victories but also in the start of the season, you could see Mazzarri’s Inter, it was only a lack of continuity in the results. TV distorts the my image, when I’m not on TV I don’t have to play a role and my true nature shows and those who don’t know me are surprised. My determination and drive to work? I have to thank my father because he communicated values like humility, work and respect. Both my brother and I have used these values in order to become what we are today.”
When speaking of his book, co-written with Alessandro Alciato, it was inevitable that he would discuss the relationship with his son Gabriel, to whom the book is dedicated: “He’s about to turn 19. He’s a man and he used to call me ‘Mister Broccolo’. Since he was a child it was strange for him to hear his father called ‘Mister’. Once it happened at a restaurant and he was struck by it. Back then one of his favourite cartoon characters was called Broccolo and he started using that name for me (smiling).”
Is it a better choice to invite the Nerazzurri coach to dinner rather than interview him? “I believe so because those who have gone out to dinner with me have received different responses. Also, the book’s author, Alessandro Alciato, is a journalist, and from the outside he saw a side of me that is much different than the one he got to know.”
The differences between Inter and Napoli became the next topic to be discussed: “The only difference is the language, with President Thohir. I have always had great relationships with all presidents, and a good relationship with the president makes it easier to coach the team and maintain the peace. This year has been special, I know that people want to win right away, you need to understand the situation.”
The referee Tombilini, a regular guest of the program, opened a controversial chapter at Inter: “I think the referees currently have so much pressure on themselves when they officiate Inter’s matches that they ask too many questions before they make decisions. It may be that young referees feel too much pressure.”
On Guarin: “If you have a defined tactical plan and know how to communicate it, at managerial level the guys know who is always present. I have treated him like everyone else, I have given him confidence and tried to get him to grow to help the team.”
Regarding the choice to become coach Mazzarri admitted that: “I was not made to be a player because I want to interact in my own way in the locker room and this corresponds to my current role. Who can become a coach? Cambiasso. He is one already. He helps a lot by conveying the ideas that the coach wants to instill in the group.”
The interview ends with a few words on Balotelli: “He has undeniable quality. I can not judge how professional he is because I never coached him, but I think you have to spend more time with him to calm him and give him confidence.”
