“It will be a great responsibility.” That’s how Javier Zanetti describes his new role as Vice President of Inter. Interviewed at home, the former Inter captain spoke about this new assignment, after an almost twenty year long honorable career as an Inter player: “It’s a new career that I agreed to undertake with all the excitement. I know that by now I will begin a phase in which everything will change, but I hope to be as useful off the pitch as I have been on the pitch.”

But what will you do exactly, Javier Zanetti? “On the one hand, the new president of the Inter Erick Thohir Inter wants to expand the brand into other markets such as Indonesia, Japan, China, Australia… In this I will help him as an ambassador, but at the same time I will try to stay close to the team, especially try to explain to young people what it means to wear the shirt of the club.” A new position that, however, comes at a time when Italian football is not living happy days: “It’s true, the situation has changed a lot because today the same figures as in the past don’t circulate. Great players will still come, but not more than five or six. That’s why in Italy you are focusing a lot on the young. It’s a big challenge: to build a competitive team but with an economy that adds up.”

Pupi also had a long discussion on the World Cup that Argentina finished in second place: “This has given me so much national pride, I felt represented. In the final, unfortunately we lacked the luck that you need on occasions like these. The future? They are going to get so many good players, and we need to see that even young people are emerging. The good thing is that a base is already there, you do not have to start from scratch.”
