Roberto Carlos, the Brazilian left-back, spoke of his time at Inter, telling the positive and negative aspects of the experience:

“I was doing well in Milan, I was having dinner at an Italian restaurant in Istanbul once and some Inter fans recognized me, they started asking me why I left the Nerazzurri. I replied by saying thanks God I’m gone, otherwise I would not have played twelve years at Real Madrid.”

“It was great to play for Inter with many memories such as my first goal in Serie A which was against Torino, and all those Milan derbies. Why I left? I did not want to lose my place in the national team.”

He then started talking about the cursed season under Roy Hodgson, who deployed him as a winger instead of his typical role at left back:

“Roy Hodgson fielded me constantly as a winger and the Copa America was around the corner, I wanted to be there at all costs and I thought that I would not be called if I continued to be used as a striker, the Serie A was hugely popular in Brazil and everyone watched the games on television. My mother once called me and said, ‘Why are you playing as an attacker? You are a left-back’, eventually I called Massimo Moratti and begged him to persuade Hodgson to deploy me back at my rightful position, he told me that I was attacking too much and usually the fullbacks in Italy are more defensive than me, then I asked him to sell me. The day after, Capello called Moratti telling him that he wanted me in Real Madrid. And Moratti was really nice to let me go.”
