Mazzarri’s system did not have place for Cassano. Also, mazzarri had problems managing him in Sampdoria. He was difficult for him then. But anyway, I think Mancini rates him as a talent.
I think his wages were insane, so I doubt we’d go down that road, also considering his age and his weight/work rate.
Then again, he’s very good behind the striker in a 4-2-3-1, especially if you’ve got dominating ball winning midfielders in the mid 2. But we don’t so I think his lack of work rate is a problem.

Not sure I’d call him “better” than Palacio, they’re very different and Palacio is currently out of form, but so is Cassano.
Palacio is very hard working, Cassano doesn’t lift a finger, he just produces magic but doesn’t help the team defensively, and Mancini likes his players constantly pressing for the ball. I doubt it will happen, but on an emotional side, I’d be happy to see him return. The man is a joy to watch with a ball at his feet.
Cassano is mature now. He said before he still supports Inter, and it was because of Mazzarri he left. We should be lucky that we can fill trequartista role by this man; Kovacic can learn from him, when to shoot or pass.
