Next week, the group stage of the qualification for Euro 2016 will be concluded and Antonio Conte has named his squad for the matches against Azerbaijan and Norway. Back to wear the blue shirt is Davide Santon and with him is also Andrea Ranocchia. For the fullback from Portomaggiore, who made his debut in the national team in June 2009, when he was part of Marcello Lippi’s squad for the Confederations Cup South Africa, it is a return after two years of absence: his last call-up dates back to the friendly against the Netherlands in Amsterdam on February 6 2013, when he did not play a single minute. WOW… No wonder why Italian national side is in a bad place. Is really Santon and Ranocchia among the best italian defenders nowadays? Guess they will be out by the end of the group stage in next years Euros.
Santon have done it really well in Inter this season and Ranocchia is a little bit harder to understand.. But he plays on a other lvl when he play for the nationalteam that’s why he is in the squad!
Yeah, I guess Santon isn’t THAT bad of a player, but still… Don’t think he will be effective in a 3-5-2, though I guess he won’t be a starter anyway as De Sciglio and Darmian are really decent full-backs.
De Sciglio is weak at marking opposition players, tracking runs and positioning. Pretty much the same problem as Santon. Their main asset is their stride and pace

I am loving Santon’s defensive work.. getting much better.. still falling short on the offense though… but I agree with “Gunnar” comment how and where would Santon play in Conte’s 3-5-2 ?
