Argentina’s national team coach Gerardo Martino spoke about his squad for the Olympics tournament in Rio this summer. It seems more than likely that Inter captain Mauro Icardi will not be called up.
“Icardi? There is the football aspect and then the rest. I always only analyze the football one. I can bring 18 players and will surely just take two number nines with me. There we look at Dybala, Vietto, Icardi and Calleri.”
Martino’s likely choice is to call up Dybala and Vietto (1 goal in 18 games). And while he says he only considers what happens on the pitch, he has often had opinions on Icardi off of it.

People in here r just in love with icardi, I don’t understand what u see in him, then u wil mention he’s record, where most of those games he anticipated, we had alot of difficulties scoring goals, and the team becomes disfunctional because if he’s movement the only thing he can do is run in to space that’s it, he can’t combine with other players like higuain does or marrota of juve Luis suarez Barcelona he’s is more or less the decent here, and don’t even compare him with milito, he was apposite what icardi is total footballer, perfect example the way milito used to combine with the team taking on players, killing John terry with that drop of a shoulder in champions league is perfection, (icardi is decent just like balotelli) I hope he leaves inter just like kovacic hernenes whom u need to build a whole team around them.
You’re obviously not Inter supporter… if not his play, then maybe statistics? 50 goals from 100 appearances is too low? I was wondering, if his low activitity is his advantage or not, now I know he’s special. I don’t understand at all what do U mean, I suppose, Barca play atm or Inter 2010, yes, I love Milito, but he had valuable midfielders! Sneijder, Eto’o, Pandev, Maicon, even Balotelli – they all worked for Principe! You can’t compare it. Icardi now has only Perisic, just imagine, if he had a good midfield. Icardi is also the only one from current squad, who truly loves Inter.
And who r u to judge, u support icardi I don’t , I look at the greater good u don’t, I like watching great game (inter vs juve) (napoli vs inter) coppa italia two beutaful games where icardi was not present, I want us in the champions league u don’t. This is football team work, not an individual.
if you truly understood what soccer was about you would know when you watch inter if we had any type of consistent passing quality in our midfield that the other strikers you mentioned had icardi’s AMAZING goal scoring rate would be even higher.
for a striker that only scores goals off of teamates feeding him the ball its funny how he scores of of BARELY being fed the ball when he makes runs INTO SPACE.
kovacic was a prime example, he fed icardi some beautiful passes that only he wouldve made. (but he wasnt consistent with it)
50/goals in 100 games is not something that many strikers can say they achieved. you have to RESPECT it if u respect the game
Exactly u r proofing my point, read my statement, he needs a whole team to work for him, to assist him, he’s inzaghi luca toni type, only good inside that area and random goals and we don’t have ozil, the players that we have are individuals, but they can score aswell.
My point is we already have him why sell him tontry and get somebody else that still might not work. We should build around what we have which an amazing 9 one of the best in the world.

The rest was either lucky wins due to individual work or embarrassing losses.

I don’t know what Martino thinking, but only real number nine between Icardi, Dybala, Vietto and Calleri is Icardi. Dybala, Vietto and Calleri are second strikers.

Argentina called him up for 1 senior game to secure him so he can’t play for other nationality. Kind of a dick move if they are never going to let him play.

yeah.. i know right.. but he’s an adult, he make his choice.. that’s why last year i remember said that he made the wrong the decision.. considering after batistuta and crespo era, argentina rarely use a true number 9. even milito not realy got his chance.. if he choose italy, i think he would be the first choice already..
Yeah that was a bad decision. As long as Messi, Aguero and such are rolling around, I think the closest to nr. 9 Argentina will be is someone like Higuain. He would be amongst starters for Italy, no doubt. Especially in this “striker crisis” they have going around.

Milito was called, but he didn’t played, ahead of him were Higuain, Messi, Tevez and Aguero… But Milito was the BEST that year, even better than Messi imho. Shame on you, Maradona. I try to like Argentina team, but they always do something wrong, like playing Higuain (he’s decent, but I hate him as a person)
