What a game, and what a tournament:
It was amazing to watch. Both teams attacked constantly, and we put in a solid defensive display and out attack was great too (should have scored more with J.Mario missing that easy set up by Perisic).
Positives:
VALERO – what a beast. Won every second ball and put in clinical tackles and passes. Without him on the pitch we lost all sense of shape, purpose, and relevance in the match. Chelsea overran us when he came off.
SKRINIR – what a signing this is turning out to be. He is so composed for such a young player, and he completely shut down any Chelsea attack. Him and Miranda will be our main pairing it seems, and with Murillo looking to go out on loan this year, seems we may need another CB for cover.
The first starting XI (well X if you remove our resident black hole at LB) – our starting 10/11 played with purpose and identity. We made Chelsea look so average, and considering we were against the champions of the PL, we ran the game.
I have said it before, that I will hold judgement on our signings until they have all been completed, and we have seen the results in the league, but I am quietly optimistic.
Negatives:
NAGATOMO – Yet again he put in a shit performance, with Chelsea starting all of their attacks down his side. Moses and Willian had him for pace every time, and Valero, Miranda, and Perisic needed to bail him out time and time again.
Those second half changes – Not quite sure what Spalletti’s plan was with removing JoJo and Candreva for J.Mario and KDog, but I don’t think it really worked. We held onto the ball well, and defended easily, but when we looked to break forward, there was no real outlet as shown with J.Mario wasting a glorious opportunity to make it 3-0 and truly put the game to bed (side note, he really needs to practice his shooting, for a midfielder in today’s game it is unacceptable to not be able to score a simple goal like that). Then more changes came along with the key change being Valero off… This proved most damaging, as we lost all shape and ability to hold the ball. He has been with us for such a short time, but he is already one of our key midfielders who we cannot seem to play without.
Now lets talk about that moment shall we…
I wont jump onto the ‘Kondogbia needs to leave’, ‘he is a joke’, ‘for 40m he plays with no intelligence’ bandwagon. For me that goal was very unfortunate. He was under pressure from a challenge from behind, and he put too much power into the back pass. But I would rather he did that, then hit it too softly for a Chelsea striker to run onto it.
If we remember back to a few days ago, KDog was a candidate for MOTM vs Bayern. He completely dominated that midfield, so one poor decision for me is not enough to justify the hate he gets by some people.
I will say that he needs to work on his mentality, along with others in the team, as once that happened we looked very shaken and were pinned back for the remainder of the game. I had hoped that the water break just after the incident would have allowed Spalletti to refocus them, but no one really went to speak to him (minus a Padelli fist bump)…
Anyway the ICC is over and we are champions… may only be a friendly tournament, but on paper we defiantly had the weaker squad, so to win it with only conceding 1 (own)goal shows real progress within the squad, a squad that still has the likes of Rano, Naga, Dambro, and Brozo… hopefully we can amend some of these areas soon.
A big shout out to the ref though… I felt like a Juve supporter during that game… we got so many unjustified decisions.
My player of the tournament has to be either Skrinir, Valero, or J.Mario.
J.Mario was excellent in the first 2 games, but he really under performed vs Chelsea.
Valero was solid in every game, and without a doubt was MOTM vs Chelsea, however he didn’t play enough minutes for me to give it to him outright.
Skrinir was solid as a fucking rock in every game. Ribery, Lewandowski, and Batshuayi were all in his pocket.
JoJo gets a special shout out too. Sevilla can go stuff themselves, if we sell for 13m then we truly are stupid. He is better then that and should stay with us.

We just had a new manager, we just got barely two signing which means our team is far from complete. If Spalletti manages to fix the way we stop playing and crash every time we concede a goal I’d be very happy. It’s just one goal and you could see everyone in panic mode. That’s what separates us from the big clubs.
I don’t think it was the goal that did that, after the mass subs at 65-70 mins we were a much weaker team, didn’t really look like we had a proper shape.
