William Carvalho is a candidate to fill Inter’s midfield, according to Corriere dello Sport, as the alternative to Mousa Dembele, who remains the favourite. Were negotiations for the Belgian to stall, it’s the Portuguese who would become the priority.

There is certainly no fear of going overboard in midfield, because Rafinha is still an unknown and there will almost be twice the weekly games to manage with Champions League, explains Corriere dello Sport.

Carvalho is one year older than Joao Mario, coming from the same club, with both having had plenty of international football experience with Portugal, including the ongoing World Cup. It’s for this reason that negotiations on all sides will not materialise until the end of the month, if he returns to Portugal early.

Carvalho – who earns €2.5 million per season in wages – has already had his future in Lisbon thrown into question, following an attack on the players at their training centre not long ago. 50 fans, angered by the clubs failure to qualify for Champions League, took to the streets, damaging club property and some players.

It is at this point that Carvalho, along with several others, requested the termination of his contract, although there is still time for the request to be withdrawn. Nothing will be decided until after he has finished playing in the World Cup.

Inter’s courtship of the player has deep roots, planted long before the unforeseen events at the end of the season. In times of desperate capital gains, the possibility of a 0-cost player is something to be seized.
