In an article published in the British based tabloid The Sun, former Inter attacking midfielder Lothar Matthäus revealed some interesting news of his time at Inter.

The FIFA World Cup winner from 1990 stated that “In 1991 I received an offer from Real Madrid, but Inter’s President Ernesto Pellegrini did not let me go, despite having asked him two or three times to give the green light to the transfer, I was told that I had to respect my contract, at which point I understood, no one put me under pressure, so I did not discuss it anymore with anyone. I would have liked to have played for Real Madrid at some point though.”

Lothar Matthäus scored 40 goals for Inter in 115 appearances between 1988 and 1992 before returning to Bayern Munich where he had spent four years before joining Inter between 1984 and 1988. Matthäus also made 150 appearances across a 20 year career with the German national team where he scored 23 goals.
