Lautaro Martinez will start tonight’s match against Mexico in Cordoba, while Mauro Icardi will start on the bench, Lionel Scaloni, the Argentina manager stated as he announced the starting eleven yesterday further postponing the Nerazzurri pair debuting alongside one another in the national team.

As Gazzetta dello Sport remind, it is not as if they have been playing together much for Inter anyway this season.

“In the Inter shirt, so far, the two of them have played together from the start in a friendly match in the summer and in the disappointing start of the Serie A against Sassuolo. In that bad game, both of them were bad and that forced Spalletti to put aside the “experiment” even though Inter showed better results later.

“After that the Argentinian duo only played together in games where Lautaro entered as a substitute. Against SPAL and at home against Barcelona his substitution gave the desired effect. In Ferrara, Icardi scored only minutes after Martinez had entered the game, and against Barcelona the equaliser of Icardi came off a chance that started with the number 10. At Camp Noù however, the two of them did not achieve much with Lautaro entering in the second half and seemed being way too nervous for that kind of a match.

“As for the rest, the two friends have been watching each other off the bench with Martinez replacing Icardi against Cagliari (scoring immediately) and Genoa (not convincing).”
