Luigi Garlando, has penned a column in today’s edition of Gazzetta dello Sport that digs deeper in to what actually is going on in the renewal process of Mauro Icardi with Inter.
“They are both right, so this match will be tough. As tough as a game between two teams that are equal and only keep the ball in the midfield,” he wrote.
“Wanda Nara is right that her husband has such a great part of this Inter, that the club can not afford to lose him. She is also right to take Higuain as an example, because Icardi is much younger, has a larger margin to improve, is constantly maturing tactically and has immediately found the right way in the UCL (something that never happened to Ibrahimovic), therefore it is not right that he earns half of Higuain’s salary. Inter on the other hand is right to point out that they placed a bet on a young prospect from Genoa, honoured him with the Captain’s band at a time when he was not yet a great player and had some disciplinary issues (Icardi’s biography and the war with the curve). Therefore, Inter has the right to continue on this path of how they value Icardi, although this renewal must mean that the next contract should mean a considerable higher salary bump. So, the discussion should have a calibration of agreements and numbers as its primary goal and should end up with a shared goal. But before sitting down for talks it is important to establish how and when discussions should take place, something that Inter is right about.”
He concluded by calling for Wanda to behave and treat Inter with respect.
“Zhang Jindong, who already has spent over €500 million, wants to bring back Inter to the top of the world, has entrusted his son Steven with the presidency of the club and has reinforced management by bringing in the professionalism of Beppe Marotta. By this, he has every right to a business intimacy for the affairs concerning this business. This means that Icardi cannot neglect his wife’s behaviour like : “My wife will take care of that”. No, Maurito is not only the husband assisted by the agent Nara, he is not a puppet. He is the Captain of Inter and must expect his wife to behave and treat the club with respect.”
