Gabriel Barbosa did not get his chance to return to Europe, instead being sent on  loan to Flamengo until the Summer. Gazzetta dello Sport raises the question: was this a strategic move by Inter to secure Flamengo’s young star, Lincoln?

There was a lot of uncertainty around this deal, as Inter were waiting to see if Gabigol could get a UK work permit, which would have allowed the Nerazzurri to cash in for around €20 million from West Ham.

However, after it became apparent that West Ham were only willing to take the Brazilian on loan, Inter did not see any benefit and instead decided to ‘butter up’ Flamengo before the bidding war for Lincoln which will no doubt take place this Summer.

The 18-year-old has many admirers in Europe so by letting the Brazilian club have Brasileiro Serie A’s top goal scorer, Inter put themselves in an already strong negotiating position.
