Having secured the signing of Diego Godin to strengthen the defence, Inter now want a midfielder who can lift the team to the next level according to a report from Corriere dello Sport.

The Rome based newspaper report that as of right now, the most discussed name to fill this position is Ivan Rakitic of Barcelona. This idea is supported by the Catalan newspapers and it is universally believed that if Inter were to make an official offer, that the Croatian would be willing to listen given the fact that Barcelona just paid €80 million for Frenkie De Jong from Ajax while Adrien Rabiot is seemingly destined to join in Summer. In short, this could leave Rakitic with very little room in the midfield and at the age of 31, it might be time for a new adventure.

The Nerazzurri attempted a similar move last Summer for his countryman Luke Modric, but Real Madrid president Florentino Perez flat out refused to sell him. The Nerazzurri remain interested in the player but it depends on what Perez decides next Summer as well. It’s believed that he wants to rebuild, putting a lot of his current players on the market, including Toni Kroos, but last Summer, not even a figure was discussed, so there would still be a lot of work to do in this respect.
