Former Inter owner and president Massimo Moratti has spoken on the decision he made to name Mauro Icardi as club captain and the current leadership’s decision to strip him of the captaincy.

“After Giuseppe Bergomi and Javier Zanetti, I found an excellent captain in Mauro Icardi, who always played enthusiastically, seriously and professionally,” he said in an interview with broadcaster Sport Mediaset.

“It seems useless to strip him of the captaincy during the season when there is no longer the opportunity to sell him. I do not know what kind of advantages it can bring.

“There was a public blame game and everything was put out in the open and this is not nice.”

25-year-old Icardi has made 28 appearances across all competitions this season wherein he has scored 15 goals. He is currently enduring a long goal drought in Serie A with him not scoring in any of his last seven league outings.
