Mauro Icardi is not the only player to have his captaincy stripped, back in 1992 a similar case happened in Rome, when coach Ottavio Bianchi took the armband away from Giannini and gave it to Voeller.

Today, the former Roma and Nerazzurri coach recalls that event in an interview with Milano based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport: “I took responsibility. There were problems, so I decided in the best interest of the team and communicated my decision to the everyone. Voeller had excellent leadership qualities”.

What happens when a player returns to the locker room after such a big decision?

“This is not a serious problem. The real problems are things like injuries. This is only a problem now because Icardi refused to go to Austria with the team”.

How does this chapter end?

“If Icardi is intelligent, he will go into the locker room to clarify his feelings with his teammates and apologise for all he has done. From there he will return to training as any player and earn his place in the team each week. However, if he wants the captaincy back, although it seems like Inter have already identified other potential candidates then he must make changes. He must prove that he is a leader and silence anyone who has any doubt”.
