Current Empoli manager Aurelio Andreazzoli has come to the defence of Luciano Spalletti, who he worked under at Udinese, for his decision to not call up Mauro Icardi for Inter’s 1-0 loss to Lazio last night.

Spalletti has been heavily criticised for snubbing the 26-year-old Argentine but Andreazzoli believes Spalletti was right to do what he did.

“I know how it works from the inside, what emerges outside does not always represent exactly what the problems within the team are,” Andreazzoli remarked in an interview with Radio Anch’io lo Sport.

“A coach must be able to confront the team, he must also do it with the outside world but mainly with the players. In the locker room there are certain dynamics and the coach knows what the problems are.”

He concluded the interview by stating: “If he makes decisions, he does not do it for masochism but for the good of the team, even if the decisions seem heavy and forced to the outside world.”
