In an interview with Radio Sportiva, former Inter striker Alessandro Altobelli reflected on Mauro Icardi’s return on Wednesday night against Genoa and the recent controversy surrounding the Argentine forward.

“Mauro Icardi showed once again that he is one of the top four or five strongest strikers in the world. I wouldn’t change Icardi for anyone, but in the previous two months he has made some very bad choices, such as not going to Vienna,” he said.

“Icardi has to prove that even without the captain’s armband that he loves Inter and wants to stay at the club too.”

Altobelli, who spent 11 years at Inter, then went on to share who he thinks has been wrong in the recent drama.

“He was in the wrong, the club leadership were in the wrong, Inter manager Luciano Spalletti was in the wrong and everyone has to take responsibility.

“Spalletti’s most blatant fault was saying Icardi is neither Lionel Messi nor Cristiano Ronaldo, Icardi is an asset to Inter and must be protected. I didn’t expect this to come from an experienced manager like him.”

He concluded the interview by what he wants for Icardi’s future: “If I have a great player like Icardi, I try to keep him, unless I really have to sell him.”
