After Antoine Griezmann announced that he would be leaving Atletico Madrid, former Inter captain has sailed up as a prime candidate to replace the Frenchman according to several reports in Spain and Italy.

Spanish media outlet Mundo Deportivo reports that there is no doubt that Atletico Madrid are interested in Icardi but they are hesitating for a number of issues, including his reputation that has been tarnished following the events of the past few months.

“With regards to Icardi, one thing is certain and that the club liked the player but the club are stuck in the fact that Icardi wants to leave Inter more than he is genuinely interested in joining Atletico Madrid. There is no doubt that he is a top striker and that among these he is the only one on the list who is forcing a transfer.”

“Icardi was close to joining Atletico Madrid when he was young, when he was playing in the youth team on the Canary Islands. The Atletico Madrid youth team coach, Sosa Espinel, recommended the club to sign him but in the end he ended up signing for Barcelona.”

“The player’s reputation worries the club and they don’t know if the calm and tranquility that Atletico want in the dressing room, falls in line with the player’s reputation.”
