Former Inter midfielder Andy Van der Meyde vowed yesterday he would advise Donny Van de Beek to join the Nerazzurri.

Piero Ausilio is a big admirer of the Ajax midfielder, who played an integral part in the Eredivisie champions’ run to last season’s Champions League semi-finals.

Van de Beek’s suitors and price tag are likely to prevent Inter from securing the 22-year-old but Van der Meyde promised he would do his best.

“I haven’t spoken to him about Inter yet because he’s on holiday in Ibiza,” Van der Meyde told FcInterNews.it.

“When he’s back I’ll put in a good word for Inter, though. I’ll tell him to sign for the Nerazzurri.

“I think Serie A could be to Van de Beek’s liking, although I’ve read Paris Saint-Germain want him too. In any case he’d be a fantastic signing.

“Donny is a friend of mine and he’ll become an incredible player. I think he was Ajax’s most important player last season.

“We’re talking about a box-to-box midfielder with lots of different qualities. He’s really good.”

Van der Meyde interviewed Romelu Lukaku on a TV show in Belgium last week and said he was confident the striker could join up with Antonio Conte at Inter.

“I think his time in England is finished and he could move to another league,” the ex-midfielder explained.

“In any case, Lukaku sent a very clear message when he told reporters in Italy that Conte was the best coach in the world. I should clarify this is only my opinion, though.”

The 39-year-old also described Conte’s appointment as head coach as ‘a great choice’, before expressing his regret at the situation concerning Mauro Icardi.

“Inter needed someone who could act as a proper boss and I think that’s what Conte is,” he added.

“The supporters don’t celebrate winning trophies anymore so it’s time to start winning again. Enough playing around.

“Icardi is a great player and he was a good captain, so the situation is a bit depressing. That’s football, though.

“Footballers come and go. The team is more important than the individual athlete.”
