Inter are preparing to accelerate their pursuit of Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku without waiting for Mauro Icardi to be sold, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.

Multiple reports recently have suggested the Nerazzurri cannot afford to meet United’s asking price without raising funds from their former captain’s departure first.

However, Suning have decided to press ahead regardless after carrying out a cost-benefit analysis that drew conclusions in Lukaku’s favour.

“There are many ways in which Lukaku, who would become the most expensive signing of the Suning era, would represent a turning point for Inter,” Gazzetta said today.

“Inter are Suning’s window into Europe and the team needs a new poster boy, given that man can no longer be Icardi.

“Lukaku would be an extremely strong candidate, as he is recognisable around the world and marketable across four continents.”

Antonio Conte believes Lukaku’s charisma and versatility make him the ideal reinforcement in attack ahead of next season.

The Belgian would be signed to improve the mentality within the dressing room and to give Conte a variety of options up front.

“If there’s one forward in Inter’s current squad he couldn’t play with, it would be Icardi,” Gazzetta noted.

“Inter’s decision to step up their pursuit of Lukaku could also be seen as an indirect message towards Mauro and Wanda.”
