A few months on from his arrival on a free transfer, Inter defender Diego Godin has discussed how he has settled into his new life.
“Between travel and training in Appiano Gentile, I don’t have too much time to do much else. I recently visited the Duomo. Me and my family are adapting. Matias Vecino and Borja Valero have made everything easier for me. I am happy here,” he said in an interview with Marca.com.
“I don’t feel like a boss at all compared to at Atletico Madrid. You have to start slowly, even if you have been a leader for the last nine years elsewhere. It is not my style to force myself on others but I feel important, of course. They know my way, they know who I am, but I am like everyone else, captain or not. I understand almost all of the Italian language, but sometimes I find it difficult to express myself.”
He then spoke on now playing in a three man defence.
“We had trained a lot to play like that. I run with the ball a lot more in attack now. I have to start the game on the right, be the first pass line towards the centre or the wings. I have to have a particular tension because Conte positions me higher up. It’s a change from Atletico, but I think I have enough intelligence to adapt.
“Inter has a great story, they are a very organised club. It makes you want to come and train yourself as much as we’re comfortable.
“We are at the beginning of the project and my comments about comparisons to Atleti were because the locker room is healthy and hungry as it was there. Both teams are built on the basis of two manager with a lot of personality. Inter was built around Conte. He is the figure and the main piece of this puzzle. Conte has a very strong personality and works many hours.”
He then spoke on how he feels about Serie A and if Inter are Scudetto contenders.
“I see it as a very physical league, even though the Serie A has changed a lot and the games are more open, with teams giving priorityto playing football. For now, I noticed it to be more physical than tactical.
“We are one of the candidates for the title but we will see what happens. Juventus has added players to a team that has already been strong for years. It is a great advantage but our club is ambitious, we want to fight to win everything but it is too early to talk about how it will end.”
He then heaped praise on Stefano Sensi.
“I didn’t know him and I was very surprised. He has great quality with the ball and that ability to make a difference at both ends using his body very well, despite being a small player.”
Next he spoke on Inter’s upcoming match with Barcelona.
“”I have played so many times at the Camp Nou. Barcelona usually have a lot of possesion and are very dangerous in attack. I imagine that Messi will be there so I expect to face the best version of Barca.”
In conclusion, he was asked if he thinks he will return to Atletico Madrid one day.
“I don’t know. I don’t even know if I’ll become a coach or something else. I haven’t thought about it yet. I live to play, and when I finish playing, I want to rest.”
