Dries Mertens will play no part in Napoli’s upcoming Serie A match at home to Inter according to a report from calcionapoli24.it.

The attacker has hardly trained in the past week in the lead up to the game at the Stadio San Paolo due to dealing with an injury which has limited him to training by himself when he can.

Napoli manager Gennaro Gattuso has granted the 32-year-old a few days of rest and Mertens has taken the opportunity to return to his native Belgium to do so. He landed in the nation’s capital Brussels shortly after 7pm on Saturday night.

Mertens confirmed absence is yet another boost to Inter’s chances of putting an end to their 23 year hunt for a win away in Naples in the league.

It comes after the news that Napoli’s star defender Kalidou Koulibaly would also be missing the match as a result of injury.
