Former Torino and Lazio goalkeeper Luca Marchegiani has come to the defence of Inter goalkeeper Daniele Padelli, who has been criticised for his performance in the Nerazzurri’s 2-1 loss away to Lazio last night.

This is the second game running that the 34-year-old shot-stopper has come in for criticism from fans and pundits with him also criticised after Inter’s Derby della Madonnina win over AC Milan.

In last night’s match at the Stadio Olimpico, Padelli has been judged by many to have committed errors at both of Lazio’s goals, just like he was with AC Milan’s goals.

The Italian is currently standing in for Inter number one Samir Handanovic, who is sidelined by a hairline fracture to the small finger in his left hand, but has far from convinced.

“What do I think of Padelli? He spent two years on the bench without playing even a minute. He is doing what he can with his experience and quality,” Marchegiani said in an interview with Rai Radio 1 show Radio Anch’io Lo Sport earlier on today.

“Handanovic is the starter, I don’t know if it would have ended with the same result if he had been there instead but I don’t think the criticism of Padelli is justified. ”

This season Padelli has made three appearances across all competitions, in which he has managed to keep a single clean sheet and concede four goals.
