The current crisis situation could lead to several ideas for the future of football being abandoned according to a report in today’s print edition of Gazzetta dello Sport.

The new look Club World Cup looks set to be moved from 2021 due to the European Championship’s having to be moved from this Summer to then as a result of the global Coronavirus pandemic.

The current Club World Cup is contested each year by the current continental champions plus a few guest sides and it is supposed to be changing to a 24 team tournament every four years but it remains to be seen what will happen with it.

The UEFA Nations League finals have been put on hold for the time being too and clubs are said to be pushing for more dates to play club games meaning national team games could be compressed into just three international breaks in the future.

The report from the Rome based newspaper goes on to add that all top leagues could be reduced to 18 teams, if not already that size, the Champions League could be reduced to no more than 17 games per club, playoffs between national teams could be reduced and plans to expand the European Championship’s and World Cup to 24 and 48 teams respectively may be scrapped.
