Benfica have sparked an interest in signing River Plate defender Lucas Martinez Quarta according to a report in today’s print edition of Portuguese newspaper O Jogo.

Benfica have become the latest in a long line of clubs to have shown an interest in the 23-year-old centre back with him also having been linked with moves to Inter, West Ham United and Valencia amongst others.

Martinez Quarta is a product of River Plate’s famed academy which has gifted the world of football players like Gonzalo Higuain, Pablo Aimar and Javier Mascherano.

He is under contract with the Superliga Argentina club until the end of the 2020/21 season and he has a €22 million release clause in his contract.

A report in the Italian media in the past few days has however suggested that River Plate could accept less than this clause and may accept an offer in the region of €15-18 million for him.
