Inter are ahead of Roma in the race to sign Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen according to a report in today’s print edition of Gazzetta dello Sport.
The experienced Belgian national team centre back is out of contract with the Premier League outfit at the end of the season and the Nerazzurri and Giallorossi have both sparked an interest in taking him on the basis of a free transfer.
Roma have identified Vertonghen as a target in case they cannot keep a hold of loanee Chris Smalling from Manchester United whilst reports have suggested Vertonghen could be a replacement for Diego Godin, who looks set to depart Inter after just a single season.
As per the Milan based newspaper’s report, Inter are currently ahead of Roma with thanks to Romelu Lukaku, who is a close friend and national team teammate of Vertonghen’s.
This season Vertonghen has made 26 appearances across all competitions to date, in which he has scored two goals and provided a single assist.
