Legendary former Inter captain Giuseppe ‘Beppe’ Bergomi has called for any grudges held between Inter manager Antonio Conte and the club to be put aside.

Conte’s future is right up in the air following several public outbursts during the 2019/20 season and a decision on whether he will stay in charge or will leave is expected to arrive shortly.

“I spoke with Antonio and suggested that he find a point to agree on with the management,” Bergomi began an interview with Italian daily newspaper Il Giorno, which appeared in today’s print edition.

“We will never know the truth, but the problem when you come to Inter is that you always seem to be treated worse than the other teams, I also had this feeling when I was playing.

“Trapattoni said “Milan is a centrifuge”, I would try to put things in order to give continuity to the project, even if there is a grudge, put it aside.”

Next he was asked whether he thinks Conte would still have had his most recent outburst had Inter won the Europa League: “Would the outburst have come even in the event of a Europa League victory? Absolutely yes, indeed, it would have been easier.”

In conclusion Bergomi spoke on the ongoing media speculation linking former Juventus manager Max Allegri with succeeding Conte in the event he leaves Inter.

“Max is the top choice as a coach if they ever change and he would accept immediately after a year out.”

Bergomi spent the entirety of his playing career with Inter between the years 1979 and 1999. The 1982 World Cup winning defender made a total of 754 apperances across all competitions for the club, a tally bettered only by Javier Zanetti. In his 20 years with the club, Bergomi scored 29 goals and won seven trophies, including three UEFA Cups.
