Inter central defender Milan Skriniar has revealed that whilst unusual for him, he understands why he continued to start on the substitutes bench near the end of the recently concluded 2019/20 season.

The Slovakian national team player found himelf slide down the pecking order after the season got back underway following the lockdown period but prior to it he was virtually ever present, even though he showed difficulties in adapting to Inter manager Antonio Conte’s system.

“I must say that I was used to playing regularly then when we started playing every three days, the coach started making changes,” he explained in an interview with Slovakian news outlet Sport.aktuality.sk.

“Since the team was doing well and we were conceding few goals, the coach preferred not to change anything until the Europa League final. Sure, I was sorry, but the important thing was that the team achieved good results.”

In recent weeks speculation regarding his future has been rife in the media with him having been linked with a whole array of clubs, including Paris Saint-Germain. He continued the interview by insisting he is an Inter player and nobody has told him that he is unwanted.

“Am I leaving Inter? I have no information regarding that. I still have a three year contract with the club, I have an agreement with Inter and I am a player at the club,” he stressed.

“Nobody at Inter has told me they don’t want me. Conte still wants me in Milan. It is not easy for him to choose who to play among the 30 players available to him.

“Of course, he doesn’t make choices to hurt anyone. He chooses for the good of the team and I have no reason to leave Inter. They still want me and I’ve always been involved in training. I’m the same player as always.”

In the 2019/20 campaign, Skriniar made 42 appearances across all competitions. In just under 3400 minutes on the field, he provided two assists.
