Marco Piccinini had a disastrous refereeing performance in last night’s match between Benevento and Inter according to a report in today’s print edition of Italian daily newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport.

Inter ran out comfortable 5-2 winners over last year’s Serie B champions at the Stadio Ciro Vigorito, a match Piccinini was drafted in to referee at the last minute due to Francesco Fourneau being taken off of the game due to COVID-19 related concerns after his presence at Napoli’s match with Genoa which came before 14 Genoa players tested positive.

The report from the Milan based news outlet explains that Piccinini being drafted in late on is absolutely no excuse for his poor performance in the match.

His first big error came in the 37th minute when Benevento goalkeeper Lorenzo Montipo and defender Christian Maggio collided. The pair hit the deck leaving Inter striker Romelu Lukaku with an open goal but Piccinini blew his whistle for a foul against Lukaku, although he did not actually foul anyone.

On the 74th minute Piccinini also failed to reward Inter with a penalty after Alessandro Tuia handballed. Tuia blocked Nicolo Barella’s shot with his arm away from his body and he also moved his arm towards the ball.
