Legendary Inter striker Diego Milito has reminisced about his famous double for Inter in the 2009/10 Champions League final against Bayern Munich as part of Italian daily newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport’s ‘Festival dello Sport’ conference ‘Argentino Live’.
“The brace in Madrid? I was moved by it, I am every time I remember the Madrid final. These are the best moments in my career, I always get great chills,” he is quoted as saying by Italian news outlet FCInterNews.it.
Milito then went on to sing the praises of former Racing Club teammate and current Inter striker Lautaro Martinez, who he believes is a complete striker.
“Lautaro? We are fortunate that every now and then an important player always comes out of Argentina. Lautaro is complete, he has proven his worth and it is not easy to find others like him but there are others like Reniero of Racing who can do well in every league.”
He was then asked what the favourite of the many goals he scored during his time in Italy with both Genoa and Inter is.
“The goal I remember most fondly? It is difficult to choose, luckily there were many. I remember the first with Genoa, against Ascoli, in my debut in Serie B in 2004. It was the right way for me to make an impact in Italian football as I did it with my first touch.
“Another important one is the one I scored against Siena in 2010 because it allowed us to win an important Scudetto. It has great significance. Even the one in Palermo. It was 1-1, my daughter was about to be born, my wife was in hospital and I risked not playing. In the end, I played the game and scored.”
In conclusion he was asked about how he sees this season going for Inter and shared his hopes of seeing the club win a first Serie A title since 2009/10.
“How do I see this season going? I see a more balanced league, even if Juve have won nine in a row. I saw a great Inter, I think the gap is smaller and I’m happy. I hope they can fight until the end for the Scudetto, yhe must do so for the history of the club.”
Milito spent a period of five years with Inter between the Summer of 2009 and Summer of 2014. During his half-decade with the club, the now 41-year-old made 171 appearances across all competitions to date, in which he scored 75 goals and provided a total of 29 assists for his teammates.
