Former Inter and AC Milan midfielder Thomas Helveg has shared his belief that the Milan derby between Inter and AC Milan today will be an enigmatic one given the circumstances which the match is being played in.

“The Milan derbies usually do not 100% reflect 100% the table and, if this year we think that coronavirus is also involved, everything becomes even more enigmatic,” he explained in an interview with Italian news outlet Mi-Tomorrow.

“AC Milan are trying to make it back great, Inter are already at an excellent level. I think it will be a great derby, very balanced.”

The former Danish national team player proceeded to share his hopes for both Inter and AC Milan to return to their previous heights.

“I hope that both Milanese clubs will be competitive again because together with Juventus they must dominate in Italy and in Europe, as they did in the past. There are other good teams like Napoli, Roma, Lazio and Atalanta, but for the sake of Italian football I hope that Inter and Milan will get back to the top as soon as possible.”

Helveg, who spent the 2003/04 season with Inter, proceeded to reflect on his spell in the Nerazzurri shirt, in which he made 32 appearances across all competitions.

“It was a positive experience. I was curious to know how things worked on the other side of the Naviglio and I had the opportunity to find out. First there was Cuper in charge, then I worked under Zaccheroni again.

“It was a group that had come from difficult years, but one that achieved qualification for the Champions League. That was the goal for the season.”

He continued by sharing his thoughts on the current situation of compatriot Christian Eriksen, who has had a difficult time since joining Inter from Tottenham Hotspur back in the January transfer window.

“With Denmark he is considered a champion. We all know his qualities in Denmark. Perhaps someone expected a player capable of scoring 25 goals in the season and always solving games alone, but that can’t be the case. I think Conte can still be able to enhance his great qualities.”

Inter versus AC Milan is to be played at San Siro this evening with kick off scheduled for 6pm local time.
