Inter chief executive Giuseppe ‘Beppe’ Marotta has warned that there will be a boycott of the national teams by Inter if things go on like this.

Yesterday Marotta hit out at the behaviour of the local health authorities and all of the discrepancies between them and also called upon intervention from Italian government minister for sport Vincenzo Spadafora.

Many local authorities chose to ‘ban’ players from clubs that have had a positive COVID-19 test in the past week from travelling for national team duty unless the players travelled to national team duty by private means but not all clubs have been impacted by this.

“This situation is unfair. There is a grey area in the lack of centrality of this way of management. In this way, each local health authority becomes central to the management of the clubs,” the former Juventus executive explained in an interview with Italian daily newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, which appeared in today’s print edition.

“I go further, if faced with a case that’s positive and this is the overall management of the situation, then I say let’s boycott the national teams.

“Yes, I mean it. This is where the credibility of the system is concerned. Football must go on, it suits everyone and then the government should give us a hand and set certain rules.”

Marotta then went on to share his ideas with regard to what should happen if things need to be stopped again due to the situation.

“If we need a moment to stop, I propose that we all stop for 15 days, set clear and equal regulations for everyone, and then we start again. This is bad for all of Italian football.”
