Inter manager Antonio Conte has shared his delight with what he seen from his team in this evening’s win away to Hellas Verona.
Lautaro Martinez opened the scoring for Inter shortly after the second half started and shortly after Ivan Ilic pulled the hosts level. Not long after Ilic’s equaliser though, Milan Skriniar scored to give Inter the lead again and this prove to be the winner.
“The best news is certainly that of having seen a tough and determined team. It was not easy to win here, my compliments go out to Juric,” he explained in an interview with Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, following the match at the Stadio Marc’Antonio Bentegodi.
“I bring with me this feeling of the whole team having passed a test for a performance against a Verona who have always done well against the big teams. We did well to get back into it again after the 1-1 goal.”
The former Italian national team boss was then asked if Inter’s recent elimination from European competition has allowed them to be more free but he was quick to dismiss this notion.
“No, absolutely not. The wound remains, it still burns and it will continue doing for everyone including me, the players and the club.”
He was then asked about AC Milan who they have, at least temporarily, knocked off the top of the Serie A standings.
“We think about us and have to do our best. It is certainly a more balanced league than in previous years. It will be very difficult, all of the others have strengthened. There will be balance until the end.”
Conte was then asked if he has asked for anything specific from the club ahead of next month’s transfer window.
“It is not up to me to ask, but to make evaluations as I have already done this summer then there is the ownership and the club management, who, based on the possibilities, can do or can’t do.
“I can make evaluations with the directors who often and voluntarily agree. But then you have to face certain situations and accept them.”
Conte then admitted to being unsure as to whether Inter must sell before they go on to buy players, as Inter chief executive Giuseppe ‘Beppe’ Marotta said pre-match.
“I don’t know. We will meet each other again, as happens in all teams. It does not happen only at Inter. Assessments will be made which, I repeat, often coincide then we have to see what happens.
“This last summer, for example, it wasn’t possible to do them and they were not made. I continue to work, proud of a group of young people who have demonstrated even today that they want to do well.”
He was then asked about what else Inter are lacking in order to get back to winning silverware, something Inter have not won since 2011.
“First of all we have to fight to be able to win. Inter have to fight until the end to win. Only one wins. Regardless of what may be missing, we must fight.”
The ex-Chelsea coach was then asked how important this evening’s win is: “The important thing is that we are in the high positions in the table.
“This is the seventh consecutive win and that must give us conviction and make it clear that we must continue on this path.
“You can lose and points against anyone but you must always stay on track. Today we really saw the desire to win, beyond the episodes of the match such as their equaliser.”
In conclusion, he went on to sing the praises of Romelu Lukaku and shared his delight with Lautaro Martinez snapping his recent goal drought.
“He is just like the others and he also said it, he feels like a player in the squad. It is not to put too much responsibility on him. We are happy with him, he is as important as Lautaro.
“When strikers don’t score for a while, they get a little anxious. Instead, he played a great match today and I’m happy he scored. Now it is time to have a little rest, this year there have been no holidays.”
