Legendary Inter captain and the club’s current vice president Javier Zanetti has shared his belief that Milanese football will get back to where it deserves and that both Milanese clubs, Inter and AC Milan, will become great again.

“I think that Milanese football will return because I believe that the two Milanese clubs will do everything possible to get Milanese football back to where it deserves. I’m sure Inter and AC Milan will be great again,” he explained in an interview with Italian news outlet PianetaMilan.com.

Zanetti then went on to discuss what it meant to be able to play in the Milan derby on many occasions during his spell with Inter which lasted nearly 20 years.

“The derby is always a special and very heartfelt game because the two teams of this city face each other. Throughout the week we only talk about this match. I remember the derby we won 4-0 in 2009. We won the match deservedly against a great opponent, as they always have been in AC Milan.”

The former Argentine national team player, who has been Inter’s vice president since the Summer of 2014, then proceeded to speak on his relationship with the AC Milan fans, which is perhaps surprisingly not one of hatred despite all his time at Inter.

“It was a relationship of great respect and it still is. When AC Milan fans see me on the streets in Milan ask me for autographs and photos and this shows that throughout my career I have behaved well. I have a wonderful relationship with the AC Milan fans.”

In conclusion he was asked which was the best Milan side that he faced during his time at Inter, in which he made a club record 858 appearances across all competitions.

“The AC Milan of Paolo Maldini, Kaká, Clarence Seedorf and Andriy Shevchenko was a difficult AC Milan to face because it was made up of great champions.”
