Former Inter striker Robert Acquafresca has announced his retirement from football aged 33 and shared his regrets over his Inter dream never coming true.

Acquafresca joined Inter in 2005 on a free transfer and was almost immediately sent out on loan to Treviso for the next two seasons.

Upon his return to the club in 2007, he was then sent on loan to Cagliari for two seasons as part of the deal that Inter acquired David Suazo in.

Acquafresca performed well during his loan stint with Cagliari but he was not afforded an opportunity upon his return to Inter as he was then sent to Genoa as part of the deal that Inter acquired Diego Milito in.

“After two excellent seasons at Cagliari, in 2009 I returned to Inter. I must say that that was a great illusion for me.,” Acquafresca explained in an interview with Italian news outlet TuttoMercatoWeb.

“The conditions for a good season were all there, but then rightly the club made other choices. They sent me to Genoa in the Milito deal and in the end they were right and to think that in January 2009 they called me to the training camp. Inter remains an illusion, a great dream that never came true.”

Acquafresca, who represented the Italian national team at various youth levels as well as the 2008 Olympics, last played for Swiss side FC Sion between 2017 and 2019 and was without a club since July 2019.
