Inter would send a strong message to their Serie A title rivals by signing Edin Dzeko from Roma, according to the Nerazzurri’s legendary former defender Beppe Bergomi.

Inter are in talks with Roma over a possible loan swap for Dzeko in which Alexis Sanchez would head in the opposite direction to the Stadio Olimpico – although a report from Gazzetta dello Sport this afternoon said the deal was off due to wage complications.

Speaking to the same publication in an interview for Friday’s print edition, Bergomi shared his belief that signing Dzeko could transform Inter’s chances of winning the Scudetto under Antonio Conte this season.

“Clearly such a deal would be a message to Inter’s rivals and would allow them to take a further step of growth,” he explained.

“When you reach a certain level, the last step becomes the most complicated one to take but Dzeko, if he arrives with his head in the right place, is that player who takes you into a new dimension.

“I confess I’m also a bit surprised, however I like the idea of Dzeko joining a lot, even if in my imagination I always see a complete pair of attackers when you have a pure centre forward and a striker who moves around him.

“Of course we must also be careful this deal does not have any negative side-effects.”

When asked to explain what he meant, Bergomi admitted Dzeko’s arrival could be bad news for Lautaro Martinez.

“There is no certainty that such a solution will work one hundred percent, because in the end you need some mental balance that this team finally seems to have managed to achieve.

“I wouldn’t want Lautaro to feel the psychological repercussions of another attacker as strong and charismatic as Dzeko joining.”

In conclusion, Bergomi, who spent the entirety of his playing career with Inter, spoke on Dzeko’s suitability for Inter.

“Certainly it would be impossible to see Dzeko, Lautaro and Romelu Lukaku on the pitch together, whereas Sanchez allows Conte to play a three-man attack because Alexis has different qualities as we saw in Tuesday’s Milan derby.

“Inter would have one more weapon to use against teams who sit deep, because with the Bosnian you can afford to hit the ball high and take advantage of his aerial ability, something that Lukaku still lacks.

“Romelu is devastating, but despite his physical stature, he’s not that good at heading and the numbers prove it.”

Inter return to Serie A action tomorrow when they host Benevento on matchday 20.
