Inter are favourites to win this season’s Serie A title, at least according to a report from a leading football stats company this week.

As per Opta, the Nerazzurri have a 35.8% chance of being crowned champions of Italy come the end of the campaign and are projected to pick up a total of 78 points.

Juventus, who have a 23.1% chance of winning the title, are expected to finish second with 76 points while current Serie A leaders AC Milan, who have a 21.3% chance of winning the title, are forecast to end up third with 75 points.

As part of the report, Opta also pointed out that the 45 goals Inter scored in the first half of this season is the greatest goal tally they have ever managed at this stage in a league campaign during their history.

The report also highlights that Romelu Lukaku has been key for Antonio Conte’s side up front, with the Belgian having scored 12 goals in the league thus far.

Lukaku has averaged 0.68 xG (expected goals) per 90 from non-penalty shots this season, which is a personal best for him.

The 27-year-old’s average xG per open play shot, meanwhile, is 0.23 in 2020-21, another personal record for the Belgian.

Lukaku’s figure of 0.23 is up from 0.15 in 2019-20, his first season at Inter, and his previous highest of 0.19 at Manchester United in 2018-19.

Inter will return to league action on Saturday night when they welcome mid-table Benevento to San Siro.
