Inter coach Antonio Conte has called for Juventus to tell the truth and show more sportsmanship and respect, following a heated row after tonight’s Coppa Italia semi-final second leg.
The Nerazzurri lost the first leg 2-1 and had to score at least twice to stand any chance of making it through to the final, but failed to score and played out a goalless draw in Turin.
Conte was reportedly then caught up in a scuffle with Juventus president Andrea Agnelli following the full-time whistle at the Allianz Stadium.
Asked to clarify reports from sources close to Juventus that Conte had clashed with Agnelli, the Inter boss told Rai Sport: “They should tell the truth, the fourth official saw what happened the whole game, they should be more polite.
“There is nothing to say but more sportsmanship and respect is needed for those who work.”
Conte then went on to share his belief that Inter paid for the gifts they granted Juventus in the first leg and must learn from mistakes.
“In my opinion we should have capitalised on the chances that we created and it’s a shame because over the 180 minutes we saw two teams fighting to the end,” he rued.
“We paid for some gifts that we gave Juventus along the way.
“Until the end we tried to score because we knew that by scoring one goal it would cause them trouble.
“I am sorry because these games are played over 180 minutes, we tried to overturn the result immediately but we couldn’t do it.
“We have to learn from our mistakes and start over and try again.”
The former Italian national team coach was then asked for his views on the performances of Romelu Lukaku and Christian Eriksen.
“It was a difficult match and we were playing against a Juventus side who have excellent players.
“Romelu did not seem to be at 100% but even today he gave his all.
“There are moments when you are in better shape and others when you are less so, but he is an important player for us.
“Did I expect more from Christian? Christian did his part, we wanted to have two playmakers with him and Brozovic, we caused Juventus problems, we played the game we wanted to, I’m happy with what he gave.”
Conte was then asked about the remainder of this season, with Inter now solely focused on trying to win the Serie A title.
“We always try to look up, even in the Champions League we tried to get to the end, sometimes you succeed, other times you do not.
“In the Coppa Italia we go out in the semi-finals as we did last year and we have to work to try to be where we want to be.
“A journey has begun, we must learn from our mistakes and we continue to work but Inter has regained credibility.
“Inter are frightening proposition for their opponents again now and tonight they scared Juve.”
In conclusion, the former Chelsea boss was asked whether Stefano Sensi is the third playmaker in the pecking order at the club.
“I would not talk about hierarchy, Stefano must return to giving 100%.
“Unfortunately he has had a year filled with injury and this makes you lose confidence.
“I’m trying to make him gain confidence on the field and work with him on a psychological level.”
Inter will return to league action on Sunday when they host Lazio at San Siro.
