Milan Skriniar is the best defender Inter have on their books, according to his Nerazzurri predecessor Francesco Colonnese.

Skriniar was close to leaving the club for the Premier League last summer when Tottenham Hotspur reportedly came in with a €35 million offer.

However, his exceptional performance against Lazio on Sunday confirmed the Slovak was back to his best after regaining his spot in Antonio Conte’s back three this season.

“Skriniar is the player who best interprets the nature of a defender,” Colonnese remarked in an interview with Italian television show Top Calcio 24 today.

“He is determined, he has a tough game face, he is hard but fair.

“Stefan de Vrij and Alessandro Bastoni are also very strong, and Alessandro has time on his side.

“But I think Skriniar is the one who will become the strongest of all.”

A report from Sky Sport Italia today claimed the 26-year-old’s return from COVID-19 has been key to Inter’s defensive improvements since the first part of the season.

Colonnese also shared his views on the corporate issues affecting Inter from a financial point of view.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and Chinese government restrictions, Inter are suffering from a real lack of liquidity and Suning are widely reported to be in talks with BC Partners over the potential sale of the club.

Some reports have however suggested that Suning are seeking a loan that would help them meet financial commitments until the end of the season, in order for them to remain in command at the Nerazzurri.

“At the moment Inter are not affected, the team is demonstrating this, but it is only right that we know what’s happening because staying like this is not good,” Colonnese warned.

Former Napoli player Colonnese, who played for Inter between 1997 and 2000, also discussed the possibility of former Inter president and owner Massimo Moratti making a return to the club.

“He is madly in love with Inter but I think it’s a bit difficult for him to return,” he admitted.

“With great sincerity I think it is difficult.

“He is getting older and Inter is something that requires a 360 degree focus, Inter is a too big commitment.

“He follows the club and I think it will be very difficult for him to be able to return to Inter.”
