Beppe Bergomi is not convinced Inter’s elimination from Europe is quite the advantage most think it is for the Serie A title race.

Antonio Conte’s side were knocked out of continental competition entirely when they finished rock bottom of their UEFA Champions League group in December, ensuring they even missed out on dropping down to the UEFA Europa League.

Inter’s title rivals, namely AC Milan and Juventus, are both still in Europe and many pundits and media outlets have claimed that Inter have a real advantage due to only being able to focus on the task at hand in Serie A.

Bergomi, however, recalled arguably the greatest season in Inter’s history and told Sky Sport Italia last night: “It is always better to stay in European competitions, regardless of the energy you use in midweek competitions.

“All coaches want to participate in more competitions.

“Inter won everything 10 years ago by winning the treble, so taking part in multiple competitions can never be a problem.”

Bergomi’s former teammate Andrea Mandorlini is among those who believe Inter are advantaged for Sunday’s Milan derby due to AC Milan’s Europe League tie against Red Star Belgrade last night.

FcInterNews.it joined Bergomi earlier this week in arguing Conte’s side were unlikely to benefit from having only Serie A to focus on.
