Inter’s title rivals have their work cut out to catch Antonio Conte at the top of Serie A, as highlighted by a report in the Italian media.

Gazzetta dello Sport’s print edition revealed that Conte has now sat top of Italy’s table for 100 weeks in total throughout his career, following the Nerazzurri’s emphatic 3-0 win over AC Milan in Sunday’s Derby della Madonnia.

Conte was top alone on 84 of these occasions between his three seasons at Juventus and his 18-month spell at Inter.

Now, for the first time during his tenure at Inter, he has them sitting top with a gap that would take closest challengers AC Milan at least two games to close, given their four-point lead after the derby win.

Inter will be particularly tough for the Rossoneri and Juventus to catch, the report argued, because they are guaranteed at least one extra free week given their opponents’ European commitments.

Conte’s side have come through what was seen as the most difficult month on paper practically unscathed, and if anything they are a better team now.

Gazzetta said Conte was now looking to extend Inter’s lead at the top and sprint towards the finish line for the club’s first league title since 2010.

His previous successes at Juventus and Chelsea suggest he will be difficult to stop.
