Romelu Lukaku’s opening goal for Inter against Genoa was correctly allowed to stand, according to a report in the Italian media today.

During the first minute at San Siro, the ball came forwards and Lukaku stuck his foot out to get the ball, with Genoa’s Ivan Radovanovic going in with his head to get the ball.

Gazzetta dello Sport’s print edition claimed referee Daniele Chiffi made the right decision not to award a foul because ‘there was really nothing in it’.

It was a rather quiet afternoon for the 36-year-old referee all-in-all, who rightly awarded Inter their third goal through Alexis Sanchez after a VAR check.

One of Chiffi’s assistant referees initially called the goal off for offside against Lukaku, but VAR confirmed that Lukaku’s position was fine and Sanchez was therefore awarded with the goal just moments after coming on.

Inter won their sixth match in their last seven and remain four points clear at the top of the Serie A table with 14 games left of the 2020-21 season.
