Sampdoria and Denmark international Mikkel Damsgaard has revealed that Inter midfielder and national team teammate Christian Eriksen is one of his footballing idols.

Although things have not been entirely easy for Eriksen during his year or so with Inter, he is still very much one of the best Danish footballers of all time and Damsgaard is full of admiration for the 29-year-old.

Eriksen impressed yet again for Antonio Conte’s side on Sunday as he played in Inter’s 3-0 win over Genoa.

Speaking in an interview with Il Secolo XIX today, Damsgaard said: “My idols are Eriksen and Kasper Schmeichel, who are doing great things in the national team.

“Many compare me to Michael Laudrup and for me this is a great honour.”

The highly-rated 20-year-old has caught the attention of several Serie A and Premier League clubs with his performances for Samp this term, having been linked with Inter among others.

He refused to rule out staying with the Blucerchiati in the summer, though, adding: “Staying at Sampdoria? Of course, why not!

“You never know and in football everything depends on performance and everything changes quickly.”

Damsgaard, who only joined Sampdoria last summer, has made 25 appearances across all competitions this season, in which he has scored two goals and provided four assists for his teammates.

He impressed when Claudio Ranieri’s side beat Inter 2-1 in January, providing the assist for Keita Balde’s goal with a slalom run on the right wing.
