Antonio Conte has built an Inter side which could compete in the latter stages of the UEFA Champions League, according to former Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri.

The Nerazzurri are six points clear of AC Milan at the top of Serie A with 11 games left, and they have a game in hand after Saturday’s fixture against Sassuolo was postponed.

Allegri made his first TV appearance last night since leaving Juventus last summer, joining Sky Sport Italia for their weekly program ‘Sky Calcio Club’.

“Looking from the outside, I believe Inter – especially since they went out of Europe – are a team that could hold their own in a quarter-final or semi-final in the Champions League,” Allegri argued.

“Nicolo Barella and Alessandro Bastoni have made big improvements.

“At the moment Inter are more consolidated, Conte has been doing a great job since last season.

“I think Inter could have a great Champions League campaign next season.”

Inter’s next match will be at Bologna on April 3 after club football resumes following this week’s international break.

Conte will be hoping to have everybody fit and available for the game at the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara, with four of his players currently positive for COVID-19 (Danilo D’Ambrosio, Samir Handanovic, Stefan de Vrij and Matias Vecino).

The club confirmed this afternoon that there were no further positive cases among their first-team squad, although a member of Inter’s ‘team group’ (not a player) did return a positive test today.
