Inter’s players could turn down their call-ups from national teams even if they’re given permission to travel today, according to a report in the Italian media today.
As per Corriere della Sera’s print edition, Milan’s local health authority (ATS) is under pressure from four federations (Croatia, Belgium, Denmark and Slovakia, with Morocco expected to soon join that list) to allow the Nerazzurri’s players to travel.
However, even if Romelu Lukaku and co. were given the green light to return home and join up with their national teams, they would only be allowed to train but not play in their respective fixtures.
“Inter have explained the situation to their players and it’s not guaranteed the players will all say yes to their national team coaches,” the Milan-based paper reported.
“They care about their national teams, but there’s a high risk of being infected with COVID-19 and then missing a key part of Inter’s season.”
Milan’s ATS imposed a 14-day quarantine on Inter’s first-team squad last week after the club recorded four COVID-19 cases (which later became five).
A report in Gazzetta dello Sport this morning said everything would depend on the results of Inter’s latest round of tests, which are due to be discovered today.
Should the club record a new positive test, as per that report, there is no chance anybody will be allowed to travel home.
Otherwise, the likes of Lukaku, Christian Eriksen, Marcelo Brozovic, Ivan Perisic, Milan Skriniar and Achraf Hakimi should all be able to leave Italy because of the rule which allows people who begin a quarantine abroad to complete the period of isolation in their home country.
