Inter are ready to reinvigorate their defence this summer, and have targeted Napoli centre-back Nikola Maksimovic as an arrival, as well as putting plans in place to offload players.

Antonio Conte’s side are currently six points clear of AC Milan at the top of the Serie A table with a game in hand, but attention is already being turned towards next season.

According to Calciomercato.com, an overhaul of the defence is a priority for the Nerazzurri and Serbia international Maksimovic has been identified as a target, with his contract at Napoli set to expire at the end of the season.

The former Torino man currently earns €1.2 million per season and his demands to double his salary have been rejected by Partenopei President Aurelio De Laurentiis, prompting his exit.

Inter are set to continue with their first choice defensive line-up of Milan Skriniar, Stefan De Vrij and Alessandro Bastoni in front of goalkeeper Samir Handanovic, with Maksimovic viewed as a capable back-up.

However, the Nerazzurri will look to release Andrea Ranocchia and Aleksandar Kolarov this summer with their contracts due to expire, whilst Danilo D’Ambrosio’s future is also in doubt after not being offered a new deal.
