Former Inter midfielder Marco Tardelli believes that the Nerazzurri’s charge towards the Scudetto this season has been boosted by facing fewer matches than their competitors.

Antonio Conte’s side sit eight points clear of AC Milan with a game in hand at the top of the Serie A table after securing a 1-0 win over Bologna last night, and are closing in on a first league title since 2010.

Appearing as a guest on Italian television channel Rai Sport earlier today, Tardelli suggested that Inter’s elimination from the Champions League at the Group Stage before Christmas had been a factor in their league dominance, with other teams struggling against fatigue.

“Being out of the cups has given Inter confidence, they have a fantastic squad and the option to rotate without suffering drops in quality,” the former Juventus star declared.

“It always remains the same. The other teams are more tired, it is quite obvious. One could have predicted this would happen and now the Scudetto is theirs to lose.”

Tardelli joined Inter in 1985 after 10 successful years at Juventus and scored twice in 43 appearances for the Nerazzurri, before departing two years later.

The 66-year-old returned to coach Inter in 2000 but was dismissed after a single season in the dugout at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza.
