Former Torino midfielder Eraldo Pecci believes Inter’s early elimination from the Champions League this season has aided them in their push for the Serie A title.

The Nerazzurri overcame Bologna with a 1-0 win at the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara last night to move eight points clear at the top of the table with a game in hand, and are on course for a first Scudetto since 2010.

Appearing on Italian television channel Rai Sport earlier today, Pecci praised Antonio Conte’s side and felt they were best equipped to challenge for the title, whilst also suggesting that going out in the Group Stage of the Champions League in December had helped them.

“Conte has reaped the rewards of the foundations laid last year. Inter also had the ‘good fortune’ of being knocked out in Europe and this psychologically gave the team the conviction to go on and win the league,” Pecci declared.

“There were fewer matches for them to contest. Inter have won because they have the best equipped team in all positions. Milan have done well but have less potential,” he added.

Pecci began his career with Bologna and won the Coppa Italia in 1974, before moving on to Torino the a year later and helping the Granata to the Serie A title in his first season at the club.

The Italian international also enjoyed a lengthy spell at Fiorentina before a year at Napoli and a return to Bologna.
