After netting the winner in Inter’s 1-0 victory over Cagliari in Serie A today, wing-back Matteo Darmian spoke of the importance of the result in the race for the Scudetto.

The former Manchester United defender struck late in the second half to decide the match at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza and send the Nerazzurri 11 points clear at the top of the table, with just eight games remaining.

Speaking to InterTV after the final whistle, Darmian revealed the significance of the win to the Inter squad and admitted that it was a struggle to overcome Cagliari, despite the Sardinians languishing in the relegation zone.

“It was a difficult match, we had several chances but they defended well. They needed the points but we were good enough to win, and gain three important points. Three golden points,” Darmian declared.

“From the start we showed our desire to take home the win. They have always defended well and I don’t understand how they can be so low in the table with the quality of players they have.

“Today it was important to win, we often score late goals and it is a good sign. It shows we are doing well, we train to be able to keep a high tempo throughout matches and maybe when others tire we can continue. We are pleased to have won a difficult game.”

Darmian, who joined Inter on loan from Parma last summer, also spoke of his delight at being able to keep Cagliari’s attackers out, whilst dedicating his goal to his family.

“It is nice for us defenders to get another clean sheet and not concede. The defensive work is done by the whole team, even the strikers, and we have to continue like this.

“I dedicate the goal to my wife and son. My wife told me I had not dedicated one to her,” the Italian international added.

The former Torino defender has made 28 appearances for Inter in all competitions this season, with his strike against Cagliari his third goal of the campaign.
