Former Inter goalkeeper Alberto Fontana is almost certain that the Nerazzurri will secure the Serie A title this season, as they close in on the Scudetto.

Antonio Conte’s side face another of Fontana’s former clubs in Napoli this evening, with victory seeing them require just 10 more points to be crowned champions.

In an interview as a guest on L’Interista’s podcast earlier today, the 54-year-old assessed Inter’s title chances and felt that they were almost guaranteed the title this season, whilst looking ahead to the match at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

“Napoli are a very difficult team. They have an important objective, so I think they have the same motivation as Inter and it will be a good match,” Fontana declared.

“The Nerazzurri start as slight favourites because they have enthusiasm and a great target ahead of them. Since they fixed their defence they have become a team capable of winning many games in a row.

“I think Antonio Conte is everything at Inter, because in two years they have closed the gap on Juventus and that is something fantastic. They haven’t won the Scudetto yet, but they have a 95% chance of doing so.

“From an attacking point of view, Inter have always been a team of Conte. In the early matches they conceded a lot, but since he adapted his defence the numbers speak for themselves. Traditionally, the Scudetto is won with the best defence in Italy.”

As a former goalkeeper, Fontana addressed comparisons between Nerazzurri goalkeeper Samir Handanovic and his competitors in the league, but felt AC Milan star Gianluigi Donnarumma was the best in Serie A.

“With Handanovic I admit that I’m not objective. In my opinion he is an incredible goalkeeper, for the ease with which he plays the role. To say he is the best goalkeeper is not correct though, because Donnarumma is fantastic”, he concluded.

Fontana made 14 appearances for Napoli in 2001 before signing for Inter, where he featured 10 times in four years.
